Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) performs a number of critical roles. It acts like a hydraulic fluid to enable shifting, protecting gears and bearings from wear, managing heat and providing frictional properties to ensure smooth, consistent shifting. Over time, the fluid deteriorates, especially if the transmission gets extremely hot from dragging or dragging.
Heat causes transmission fluid to oxidize or break down. Fluids that break down create sludge that clogs narrow passages and interferes with shifting.
